Why Then Are The Majority of Muslims, Who Are Chosen For Such a Peaceful Faith, Not So Peaceful?God had already answered this question before it even was an issue for the world;
"And most men, though you may desire it so, will not believe. And most of them do not believe in God without associating others with Him." - Surrat ul Yusuf, 12. 103, 106.Therefore, the majority of mankind will not believe in God and the majority of those who do will not be without associating others with God. Why is this? A human tragic. It begins with Adam and Eve, the two people who dwelled among good(forget other humans of today who have evil all around them.) It has to do with the freedom of choice. Man has been created with curiousity. Curiousity killed a cat, says a saying. There is an itching part in all humans which itches for idolworship. Such part, in Islaam, is called; sheytaan.
What Is Sheytaan And How Can We Be Safe From It?
Sheytaan is what the Judeo-Christian culture calls "bad spirit." It exists within the human being to drive him away from God. Why? Because the Devil, or Ibliis as it's called in `Arabic, used to be an Angel of God until it became evil by refusing to acknowledge man(whom God had breathed His Spirit unto and was therefore Holy.) God made a pact with the Devil that God would respite it until the Judgement Day(when the world ends.) And the Devil was given the power to be present in man's thoughts(which is called sheytaan.)
However, God did not leave the human being powerless. God gave the human being a power much powerful than that of the Devil; the rou'h, the Spirit of God which is full of Wisdom and Guides the human being and is always positive and against the spirit sheytaan. Hence, why the human being has a constant battle within himself - which is what usually people reffer to as "the heart and the mind."
Unlike the sheytaan, the rou'h does a double-job;
1. Fight for your salvation(by constantly fighting the sheytaan)
2. Provide you with the Truth; the information you need to be successful against the spirit sheytaan.
But the rou'h has a downside, remember God had to be Just. Because you have the power to choose, the rou'h cannot decide for you. And, not only that, unlike the sheytaan, which always approaches you with evil, the rou'h will not approach you(though it may fight on your behalf... when you can't decide, like in sleep or sedetated, etc.) The rou'h is a pure stored information device. You have access to it, and if you learn to tell the difference between it and the sheytaan, you can lead a life full of righteouness and strength. Hence why people always advice; "follow your heart."
Is sheytaan in the heart or in the mind? In the mind because that is where you have your thoughts. The heart is just full of right information(where you have your rou'h.) The mind is full of neutral information - meaning that the mind information are neither evil nor good in the begining until the sheytaan starts whispering in it and then you think it is part of the information. But the mind is important because it represents you; neutral. You are neither evil or good until you decide to be one. And becuase the mind represents you, it is where you make the final decision. For example, the mind gets information from both the shaytaan and the rou'h. But the mind decides which one it will follow.
This is why crazy people are not accountable. Because they lack the whole purpose of being active; the mind(2.225.) This is why when you sleep walk, and end up doing things you wouldn't do awake, you do not have any clear memory of it when you wake up. The reason for not remembering? There was never you(the soul, islam teaches the soul is taken by God every night in your sleep, 39.42) so you are just an animal-like, the rou'h will not correct you because it does not approach, the devil has no purpose in directing you to evil because it means nothing to it(the Devil only cares what you do of evil while your soul is present.)
So, if you learn to tell the difference between rou'h and sheytaan, you will be successful. For example, the sheytaan is what tells you; "oh, you will pray ten minutes later" and the rou'h is what tells you "there is no time like the present - pray now!"
