But it is hard to rely upon books that contradict themselves. While the above hadiths condemns the use of musical instruments, the following hadith shows the Prophet himself allowing it;
That is what millions upon millions of Muslims rely upon. Stories which vary from one narration to the next. For example, on another narration, same `Aisha is quoted to have said the story differently. On this story, the Prophet does not like the girls singing at all and, in fact, looks the other side. However, one gets the message from the story that the Prophet allows it for her(`Aisha's) sake. There are about five different narrations of this same story(which vary and are quiet different) in several sahih books.
After this, the scholars turn to us and say; "But what about verse 31:6?" Well, lets quote it:
Actually, the above verse talks to poets of Arabia in the time of Muhammad. For example, the poets have made alot of poetry against Muhammad and early Muslims. Discredit and propoganda were the usual aim. And this the same thing God talks about in the following verses;
Does the verses above condemn poetry? No. They condemn the kind that is used unjustly. That is what is condemned. And, believe us, Music is no different. Every coin has its sides. There are music that is used unjustly. There are music that puts down others. That preaches hate. That insults women. So on and so forth. However, Islam does NOT condemn music. Music is literally the language of the world. No matter where you go, there is music. Even in the tents of Wahabbi Arabia, there is Music. Music is the only thing that trescends beyond other languages. In the remote areas of Iran, you will find people listening to foreign music. Millions of people tune in each year to their televisions to listen to wide variety of world music in the World Music Awards!
Go out today, go to a dance club. Go wild. Sing from your heart(or just pretend like you know the words to the techno music playing by just murmuring.) The best this in life is Music. It heals the heart and it makes you grow. Truly, without music, there is no light. You begin singing when you get out of the whomb of your mother. That is music. Don't be afraid. Show your talent. It is okay! God loves Music and so do we!
Music! Talk about controversial issue in Muslim World. Most traditional scholars say that Music is haraam(illegal) in Islam. Of couse, such sources rely upon the hadiths(supposedly, Prophet Muhammad's sayings.) The following hadith is an example;
Narrated Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari: that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' God will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection." BUKHARI, Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v
Narrated `Aisha: Abu Bakr came to my house while two small Ansari girls were singing beside me the stories of the Ansar concerning the Day of Buath. And they were not singers. Abu Bakr said protestingly, "Musical instruments of Satan in the house of God's Apostle!" It happened on the festival(`Eid) day and God's Apostle said, "O Abu Bakr, There is a festival for every nation and this is our festival." BUKHARI, Volume 2, Book 15, Number 72
And of men is he who takes instead frivolous discourse to lead astray from God's path without knowledge, and to take it for a mockery; these shall have an abasing chastisement. Surrat ul Luqman, 31.6
And as to the poets, those who go astray follow them. Do you not see that they wander about bewildered in every valley? And that they say that which they do not do, except those who believe and do good and remember God much, and defend themselves after they are oppressed; and they who act unjustly shall know to what final place of turning they shall turn back. Surrat ul Shu`ra', 26:224-227
